The Website Design Process That Starts Before the Brief
Most designers ask for your content, your goals, and your brief; then get to work. My process starts somewhere different: with a deep collaborative inquiry that surfaces the clarity every design decision builds from.
This is what that process looks like, phase by phase.
A thorough discovery phase changes results
As a professional graphic designer, I spent sixteen years in corporate design: receiving client briefings, translating vision into design, delivering results. And I did it well.
Most website designers follow a version of that same model: an initial call, overall direction, a request for content and photos, then execution.
My process is different.
After years of working that way, I found the results were good. Functional. Considered. They sold products.
But something was consistently missing: depth, coherence, that quality of genuine alignment between a business and its online presence.
The issue wasn't skill or effort. It was that the process started at the brief, rather than at the Brand essence.
"I felt like I was receiving a series of transmissions rather than going on a little course. The meditations were really powerful — that was when the key insights were delivered. I realised some things were so deeply embodied that I hadn't acknowledged them to myself, so bringing those to conscious awareness as I go into my design brief has been wonderful. Clarity is the key word here and everything has become really simple."

Embodying Your Brand Essence: where the process begins
That gap led me to develop Embodying Your Brand Essence: a guided inquiry process combining thought-provoking questionnaires, meditations, and deep collaborative sessions that surface the clarity every design decision builds from. Clients describe it as a perceptual shift. The result is a website that doesn't just represent your business: it holds the full depth of it whilst still built for commercial growth.
There's also a standalone course available to clients and non-clients: Embodying Your Brand — one hour that takes you into the foundations of brand clarity.
The process is a genuine collaboration
A blend of done-with-you and done-for-you.
Initial Clarity Call
This is where we meet and establish the resonance between us. I'll reflect on your vision, ask the questions that matter, and offer the insights that bring early clarity. You'll leave with a clear picture of the path forward.
Phase One: The Deep Dive brings the foundations to the surface– 4 weeks
This is the discovery and foundations phase. We work together to distil the true essence of your brand: what it stands for, what it needs to express, and how every element — visual, verbal, structural — will serve that.
Weekly Zoom and Slack interaction for ongoing guidance and feedback
Access to my courses: Embodying Your Brand and Plan and Create Your Photoshoot
Tailored questionnaires, visualisations, and guided exercises to sharpen your messaging
Design and strategic expertise throughout, drawing on thirty years of professional experience
Art direction for your photoshoot, in-person or remote, covering every detail: clothing, location, body language, atmosphere. Everything intentional, everything considered.
"Embodying Your Brand was very clarifying. It is different to what I expected, especially as it was activating both sides of the brain. I loved it, it was not academic and thinky. When you guided me to connect to the true essence of my brand I received the insights and had tears in my eyes."
— Danielle Gardner, The Quiet Marketer. Spain
Phase Two: the design takes shape while you integrate– 2 to 4 weeks
Once your brand foundations are in place, I build. This is where you step back and the design takes shape. Most clients use this time to settle into everything the first phase uncovered, while I bring the visual and structural work to life.
Phase Three: you launch with full ownership and editing confidence– 2 weeks
The final phase is about a smooth, confident launch. All technical setup is handled: domain, integrations, settings, everything in place before handover. From there, the site is entirely yours.
Pre-recorded tutorials so you can manage your site independently
Slack and Zoom Q&As for direct support
Full technical handover so nothing is left unfinished or unexplained
You leave knowing exactly how to update your site and with the confidence to keep it current.
Support is available after launch. From adding pages, to e-commerce or email campaigns.
This is a spacious, strategic process; a deeply considered collaboration from first clarity to published site.
